Is Poll Everywhere Anonymous? How to Tell Before You Respond
Poll Everywhere only hides your identity when the presenter enables its anonymous setting before launch. How to spot that banner before you vote.
Short answer: Is Poll Everywhere anonymous? Not by default. In Poll Everywhere, anonymous participation is an optional setting that the presenter must turn on per activity before anyone responds, and it cannot be turned on or off once the activity has received its first response. The good news for respondents is that Poll Everywhere makes this easy to check: when an activity is genuinely set to anonymous mode, Poll Everywhere displays a specific confirmation notice on your screen before you vote. If you don't see that notice, assume your screen name, registered account, SSO login, or SMS phone number is recorded in the presenter's response log.

In Poll Everywhere, the presenter cannot make a poll anonymous after responses start coming in - and when an activity is anonymous, you'll see an explicit banner on your screen saying so.
How to tell if a Poll Everywhere activity is anonymous in 5 seconds
Unlike survey tools where you have to guess what the admin toggled on the backend, Poll Everywhere changes what the respondent sees on screen depending on the activity's configuration:
| How the presenter configured the Poll Everywhere activity | What you see on your phone or browser screen | What the presenter sees in the response log and exports |
|---|---|---|
| Anonymous participation is ON (configured before any responses arrived) | Displays an explicit notice on the activity page stating that responses to this activity are anonymous; never asks for a screen name | Your answer only - no screen name, no registered participant name, no email, and no SMS phone number |
| Default mode (Allow everyone) with Screen names on | Prompts you to enter a screen name (or uses one stored in your browser from an earlier poll in the same room) | Your answer + whatever screen name you typed + submission timestamp |
| Restrict to registered participants only (common in workplace SSO or university LMS setups) | Requires you to log in to your Poll Everywhere participant account or company/campus SSO | Your answer + your full registered name, email address, custom participant ID, and timestamp |
| SMS / Text-message voting (when Anonymous participation is OFF) | You text a code to a Poll Everywhere number | Your answer + your mobile phone number (or the registered account tied to that phone number) |
Three Poll Everywhere rules every respondent and host should know
Poll Everywhere was designed first and foremost for live audience response - classrooms, university lectures, all-hands presentations, and training sessions where presenters often want to grade quizzes or track attendance. Because of that heritage, its privacy model has three sharp edges:
1. Anonymity is set per activity, not automatically across a whole session
A presenter's Poll Everywhere deck might contain five slides: three multiple-choice polls, a word cloud, and an open-ended Q&A activity. Because Anonymous participation is an activity-level setting, Slide 2 can be anonymous while Slide 3 (in the exact same presentation URL, pollev.com/presentername) is not anonymous. Always glance at the banner when the presenter advances to a new slide.
2. Presenters cannot turn on anonymity retroactively
Poll Everywhere's support documentation is explicit on this rule: once an activity has collected even a single response, the Anonymous participation toggle is locked. If a manager launches a live poll in a team meeting, forgets to check the Anonymous box, collects ten answers, and promises to "turn on anonymous mode before exporting," the software won't let them. Their only option is to clear/delete all existing responses or duplicate the activity and start over.
3. Even in anonymous mode, live charts update one vote at a time
In a live presentation, Poll Everywhere updates the slide chart in real time as votes arrive (unless the presenter hides the visual chart on screen). On a small team, watching a live bar chart or word cloud populate as people tap their phones makes it easy to infer who submitted the lone dissenting vote or the recognizable two-word phrase.
What about Poll Everywhere Surveys (multi-question links)?
In addition to single live slides, Poll Everywhere lets presenters bundle several activities together into a Survey shared via a web link. How does anonymity work there?
- If every activity inside the Poll Everywhere Survey has Anonymous participation enabled, no participant names or emails are recorded.
- However, if even one question inside that survey bundle was left with Anonymous participation turned off, Poll Everywhere can prompt for a screen name or require registered login for the session.
- Just like general form builders (Microsoft Forms or SurveyMonkey), Poll Everywhere does not enforce a minimum group size threshold (such as requiring 5 responses before the host can read results). The presenter can view responses in the backend even if only one or two people answered.
Checklist before you answer a Poll Everywhere poll at work
If your manager or HR lead drops a pollev.com link into Slack or puts a QR code on an all-hands slide:
- Look for the explicit anonymous confirmation on the activity screen. When Poll Everywhere's anonymous mode is active, the interface states clearly that responses to the activity are anonymous.
- Re-check when the slide changes. Remember that a presenter can mix anonymous and non-anonymous activities inside the same
pollev.com/usernameroom. - Avoid texting your vote via SMS on sensitive topics unless you have verified on the web view that the activity is in anonymous mode; standard SMS voting logs your phone number.
- Watch out for registered participant logins. If clicking the link asks you to sign in with Okta, Microsoft, or Google, check twice whether the activity itself displays the anonymous banner before typing a blunt open-ended comment.
- Be careful with live word clouds and open-ended tiles. Even when your name is hidden, a live word cloud or scrolling text wall shows your exact words on the projector seconds after you hit Submit.

Compare InviziPoll vs Poll EverywhereWhen to keep Poll Everywhere, and when to use InviziPoll
Poll Everywhere is a strong tool when your primary workflow is live, synchronous audience participation: embedding interactive quizzes inside PowerPoint, Keynote, or Google Slides, running classroom attendance and LMS gradebooks, or energizing a 300-person conference room.
Where Poll Everywhere is not a fit is sensitive workplace feedback - leadership trust pulses, post-reorg check-ins, ethics questions, or small-team polls where employees need guaranteed protection rather than a per-slide checkbox that locks after Response #1.
Full disclosure: we built InviziPoll specifically for anonymous workplace polling, so weigh our perspective accordingly. Here is how our architecture differs from a live audience response tool:
- Anonymous by architecture, never an optional per-slide toggle. Every ballot in InviziPoll is encrypted in the respondent's browser before upload, and our servers store ciphertext only (
id,poll_id,encrypted_blob). There is no "registered participant" mode that attaches names to responses. - Batched release with a 3-response reserve pool. Instead of flashing votes onto a screen one by one, InviziPoll holds all results until at least the poll's minimum group size has answered (5 by default, never below 3) plus a 3-response reserve pool (8 responses on a default poll). While the poll is open, new responses release only in random batches of 3 to 5 with at least 3 held in reserve, and everything remaining flushes together when the poll closes.
- No timestamps, no IP logs, and no submission order. Written answers are shown word for word, shuffled and undated, and demographic breakdowns wait until poll close and require at least 5 respondents.

FAQ
Is Poll Everywhere anonymous by default?
No. By default, Poll Everywhere activities are not in anonymous mode and can record screen names, registered participant accounts (name and email), or SMS phone numbers. The presenter must explicitly turn on the Anonymous participation setting in the activity's configuration before collecting responses.
How can I tell if a Poll Everywhere poll is anonymous?
When the presenter has enabled Anonymous participation on an activity, Poll Everywhere displays a message on your participant screen stating that responses to the activity are anonymous, and it will not ask you to enter a screen name. Because this setting is per activity, check the notice again whenever the presenter switches to a new question.
Can a presenter make a Poll Everywhere activity anonymous after people have already voted?
No. Poll Everywhere documents that the Anonymous participation setting cannot be enabled or disabled once an activity has received any responses. To make an active poll anonymous, the presenter must clear all existing responses first or create a new copy of the activity.
Does Poll Everywhere show phone numbers when you vote by text message?
If Anonymous participation is turned off (the default), Poll Everywhere records the sender's mobile phone number - or links the vote to the registered participant profile associated with that phone number - in the presenter's response history. When Anonymous participation is turned on before voting starts, phone numbers and identifiers are omitted.
Can the presenter see individual responses in Poll Everywhere even in anonymous mode?
In anonymous mode, the presenter cannot see your name, email, or phone number, but they can still see each response as it arrives in real time and view responses even if only one or two people participate. There is no built-in 5-person minimum group threshold hiding small-team results.
How does InviziPoll compare to Poll Everywhere for employee surveys?
Poll Everywhere is built for live presentation and classroom engagement where anonymity is an optional per-activity toggle and results update one vote at a time. InviziPoll is built for asynchronous workplace surveys where every response is encrypted in the browser, stored as ciphertext only, stripped of timestamps, and released in random batches above a minimum group threshold.
